Open Water Lifeguard
This qualification is perfect for people with a passion for open water sports.
The OWL qualification is based on lifeguarding outdoor activities such as open water swimming, paddle boarding, and inflatable aquaparks.
It will enable participants to support their local club or event with safety cover, or to get a job with an outdoor aquapark or activity company.
OWL Renewal
The OWL qualification is valid for 2 years. Before the end of the 2 year period the qualification must be renewed by completing a one-day refresher course, followed by an assessment day.

Before enrolment:

Hold a current valid OWL qualification

Be aged 16 years or over

Be competent and confident in open water

Be able to submerge underwater confidently

Be able to swim at least 400m continuously in a pool or open water, on their front showing urgency
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Candidates that hold a current RLSS UK National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) can attend a one-day RPL OWL qualification course, and will then attend the assessment day.
Once successfully obtained, the OWL qualification can be used as a standalone qualification to supervise and provide rescue cover for planned, organised and risk assessed activities in still, non-tidal water.

Open Water Lifeguard (OWL)
The Open Water Lifeguard course enables candidates with no previous lifeguarding experience to achieve a recognised qualification in water rescue, CPR, and first aid.
Candidates will be assessed as competent to provide supervision and rescue cover, for planned, organised, risk assessed activities in still, non-tidal, open water.
The qualification is valid for 2 years, and will need to be renewed before expiry.
Candidates will be assessed on three sections:
Section 1- The open water lifeguard, environment, hazards and supervision
Section 2- Responding to an emergency and taking action
Section 3- CPR and First Aid
